About

An advisory that sells judgment, not implementation.

Saltbridge is not an implementation shop, not a software vendor, and not a staffing firm.

What we are

The layer under the initiative

We are an AI-readiness advisory. We tell CEOs and CIOs which AI opportunities are real, what their data foundations need first, and which processes to rebuild rather than automate.

We work with mid-sized organizations that have outgrown their operating model — the CEO, CIO, CTO or COO with the authority to fund and act on what we find.

Saltbridge solves the readiness gap between what AI promises and what an organization's data, processes, and operating model can actually support.

About Ian Smith

Ian Smith founded Saltbridge in 2019, and the name is the idea behind it. In a battery, the salt bridge is the link between the two halves of the cell. Without it, no current flows and the battery has no power. Saltbridge was founded to be that connection between people and technology, so the power in both can be released. Today that means helping leadership teams get real value from AI: where it will pay off, where it won't yet, and what has to change underneath before it can.

He has spent more than 30 years where new technology meets the organization that has to make it work. At Kraft Foods (now Mondelēz International) he rose from the graduate program to lead digital transformation, global digital marketing and, finally, digital innovation. He rebuilt business processes around new technology and set digital strategy and governance across every market the company operated in.

He went on to found Route 15 Media, a digital transformation and marketing agency serving Fortune 500 brands. He then served as COO of MillerSmith, the firm formed when Route 15 merged with the Brian Miller Design Group.

Ian has built three companies from the ground up and taken them through to successful exits. For eight years he taught marketing and digital business models in the MBA program at Sacred Heart University. He holds a BSc in Industrial Chemistry from City, University of London.

He works from both sides of the table. As a founder and board advisor in fintech and health tech, he makes the same calls Saltbridge's clients make: what to build, which data to trust, and when to stop.

Method

How this practice works

Five commitments. The last one is the differentiator, not a caveat on it.

01We diagnose before we recommend

Most AI initiatives don't fail on the technology. They fail because the data underneath them can't be trusted, the processes around them were designed for a different era, and no one at the top can say what good looks like. We start by finding out which of those is true in your case, not by pitching a build.

02We separate what's real from what's fashionable

A ranked shortlist of where AI creates value in your business — and an equally clear list of where it doesn't — is the first deliverable, before anything gets funded.

03We won't automate a broken process

Automating a broken process makes it faster at being broken. Where a workflow needs rebuilding for a data-led environment, we say so before recommending automation over it.

04We design pilots to fail honestly, not to flatter the technology

Most pilots are built to prove the technology works, which is the wrong question. We agree the success threshold before a pilot starts, so the go or no-go decision is made on evidence rather than sunk cost.

05We will tell you to stop

If the data can't yet carry what's planned, or the process change won't stick, we say so — even when it means recommending against the initiative that brought you to us. We're direct about what won't work, and that stance is the differentiator, not a caveat on it.

We're direct about what won't work. That tends to save more money than the parts that do.
